Canada vs Australia PR: Which Immigration Path Suits You?

Canada and Australia are the two most popular PR destinations for Indian applicants. Both offer transparent points-based systems, clear pathways to citizenship, and strong economies. But they are quite different in their requirements, processing times, and post-landing experience. This guide helps you choose.

Canada: Express Entry System

Canada's Express Entry is a pool-based system. You create a profile, get a CRS (Comprehensive Ranking System) score, and wait for an Invitation to Apply (ITA) in periodic draws. The minimum CRS score has ranged from 470–510 in recent draws. Key factors that boost your CRS score: age (under 35 is ideal), education level, Canadian work experience, IELTS scores (CLB 9+ for maximum points), and a valid job offer or provincial nomination.

Processing time after ITA: 6–8 months. Minimum points needed: ~470–510 (varies by draw type).

Australia: Skilled Visa (Subclass 189/190)

Australia uses a different points test. You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect. Points are calculated based on age, education, English proficiency, work experience, and Australian qualifications. The minimum points to receive an invitation varies by occupation — typically 65–80+. Your occupation must be on the MLTSSL (Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List).

Processing time: 12–24 months (longer than Canada). Minimum points: 65 (but most invitations go to 80+).

Who Should Choose Canada?

Choose Canada if: you are under 40, have a technology or healthcare background, want faster processing, are comfortable with cold winters, and ideally have a job offer or provincial nomination. The Express Entry system is very transparent — you can calculate your exact CRS score today and know your chances.

Who Should Choose Australia?

Choose Australia if: you are in a high-demand occupation (nursing, civil engineering, accounting, IT), prefer a warm coastal lifestyle, are willing to wait longer for the visa, and have strong English skills (IELTS 7+ helps significantly). Melbourne and Sydney have extremely large Tamil communities and excellent quality of life.
